Why use SIP for link negotiation in audio broadcasting? 

SIP enables you to get away from the need of public, static IP addresses at each end. These endpoints don’t know each other’s IP addresses; they just “dial” a registered SIP address to start the connection process. By eliminating the public IP address, you can keep everything behind the firewall, significantly increasing security.

How does the installation work?

  1. Get a standard endpoint address for each of the devices. While at it, make sure Opus is enabled on the SIP server (probably is).
  2. Enter the “Registrar” (server name), “Username” (extension name) and the “Password” in the configuration of the SIP Opus Codec.
  3. Enabling only the Opus format on the device forces the SIP server to chose the best quality format with the Opus transmission. Blog post about the SIP Opus Format.


The device is ready to call any other SIP endpoint from the frontpage with <extension>@<sip-server>.


Do I need a SIP Server?

We recommend it, because it’s the most convenient and secure way to do it. But you can also pair two devices manually (read the installation manual).

As always with Barix devices, they integrate seamlessly into a multivendor environment. You can use the SIP Opus Codec with the equipment you already have installed.
