Barix technology takes off in Lufthansa’s VIP planes

Lufthansa Technik, a specialist in equipping VIP and executive planes, uses Barix technology in its flexible inflight sound system for distinguished fliers.

The company was looking for a reliable system for its sound sources, which, despite the minimal space available, offered an alternative to single (space-consuming) CD players and met the stringent requirements placed on aircraft components. The Barix Exstreamer 100 was the only product to offer a non-battery-powered MP3 streamer including Power Interrupt Recovery. If power is suddenly lost, it does not switch to an undefined state, but can withstand a (simulated) outage in any operating mode (in real life, if energy in the plane is short due to a generator cutting out, for example, “non-critical” systems are simply being switched off). The device also meets all other decisive criteria: Its energy-saving electronics, consuming just 4 W, is housed in a small fireproof aluminium case and can be operated at 9-30 V DC or 12-24 V AC. It is resistant against typical vibrations in planes and temperature fluctuations when parked at airports (from -30 °C to +60 °C depending on location). Thanks to its technical robustness and simple maintainability, the device has a long operating cycle without requiring adjustments.

This sound system offers great flexibility to VIP air travellers: They are given a collection of USB sticks to choose from, which display what sort of music or content (e. g. talking books) they can expect. Also, they leverage from excellent sound quality delivered by the Exstreamer 100.

All these features and the outstanding service provided by the Swiss pioneer in IP-based audio, intercom and control/monitoring devices for its software adaptation, tipped the scales for Lufthansa Technik. In fact, other applications are already getting off the ground: Lufthansa Technik plans to install Barix devices in a sound system which shall provide all passengers with precisely the music they want to hear. The first trials are currently in progress at partner Hermstedt GmbH to connect the Exstreamer 100 to their “Hifidelio” music centre. Using the internet connection found in most VIP jets, this will open up livestreams (internet radio) to listeners/passengers. Here again, the technology used for the Exstreamernbsp;100 takes full effect – open standards make it child’s play to hook up.
