Exploring Barix Products and their capabilities in the VoIP/SIP Arena

SIP phone systems have rapidly gained widespread acceptance because of the many advantages they have over traditional solutions, not least cost reduction and increased features. However, most implementations are a direct functional replacement for a phone system. Using Barix IP Audio devices, the reach of a SIP system can be greatly extended:
- SIP Paging Gateways
- SIP Intercom devices
- SIP door stations
(SIP: Session Initiation Protocol)

Barix IP Audio devices are used worldwide, distributing audio in retail chains, shopping malls, hotels, at live events, in railway stations; the list goes on. Using Barix, multi-zone, multi-source paging systems are straightforward to implement.

SIP Paging, VoIP Paging

Example configuration instructions for Asterisk are available from Barix, which show how multiple extensions can be configured enabling the user to automatically select the right zone in the paging system. Some customers need the flexibility provided by a VoIP paging system, but do not want to use a PC as a master station, for operational reasons. The Barix PS16 is a ruggedized desktop paging console, ideal for use as VoIP Paging master station, with up to 100 target buttons, reliable, PC free architecture, excellent audio quality, and it can also generate Pre-tones and alarm sequences.

SIP door station

The SIP application software, when loaded on an Annuncicom device, enables the device to function as a SIP door station. When a caller presses a call button, the SIP door station will call a preconfigured number (Reception, Security...). Multiple call buttons are supported for multiple destinations. The called number can, of course, also be a hunt group, a forwarding extension etc, so that the call from the SIP door station can be treated like any other call in a VoIP system. When the call is answered, audio is routed full duplex and bidirectional, allowing the parties to talk to each other, and the person answering the call can activate the relay in the SIP door station hardware by entering a preconfigured DTMF sequence, allowing an electronic lock to be released, for instance.

SIP Intercom

The SIP application software, when loaded on an Annuncicom device, enables the device to function as a SIP Intercom. The devices can set up an intercom connection, either directly via a SIP call, or via a typical PBX (registry). The intercom call can be started in one of several ways: activated by audio level – when the audio reaches a threshold level, the Annuncicom can automatically call it's preconfigured partner (supervision application). by contact closure – the user triggers the call. This could be an obvious 'Call' button, a motion sensor, a hidden contact... by a command interface. Once the connection is established, it can either be used full duplex (both parties talking, “hands free”), or “push to talk”. The disconnection can be initiated by an “End Call” button, or by timeout. The SIP Intercom application supports multiple audio codecs and can be configured via web browser. An ideal “central” desktop VoIP Intercom device is the Barix PS16, a high quality, PC free, standalone device, running the same SIP Intercom firmware. This device offers many configurable buttons, a display, high quality speaker and gooseneck microphone.
